Has The Price Of Gas Changed Your Lifestyle?

November 9, 2007 · Filed Under · 6 Comments

Rip Off!Here in Northern California, I paid $3.27 per gallon for regular unleaded gas yesterday. Cost me $82 to fill up my truck. I feel like such an idiot when I am at the pump, and actually look around for somebody else filling up a big truck or SUV to make me not feel alone! My wife and I were going to load up the kids and the dogs and head down to my parents next weekend, who live about 350 miles to the south in Santa Cruz. But for the first time, we looked at what it is going to cost and are reconsidering. It would cost us about $175 in gas to get us there and back. Yikes! I have heard rumors that gas may approach $4 per gallon for premium by the end of 2007. I am curious at what price does gas have to reach before Americans change their lifestyle and start to demand changes. Has the price of gas changed your lifestyle at all? Have your travel plans been altered? Please leave a comment!

Also, check out a post I did a while back on ways to lower your gasoline costs. #1, sell my truck!!

We drive the same amount now as we did before, except for my husband’s work, but those costs are reimbursed. Since he’s traveling & we wanted the most bang for our buck on reimbursements, we did sell one of our trucks for a used sedan with twice the mileage. However, part of the reason we bought the sedan was because I am not proficient at driving the manual transmission so this made our second vehicle more usable.

My favorite is still my truck, in spite of it being a total vanity purchase & a bad idea in general, aside from the mileage, the payment itself sucks, and so does the depreciation…that is another story for another day.

I’ve also considered selling my Honda Ridgeline, but that’s more to reduce the clutter in my life than to save on gas. I really don’t drive it much anymore (anout 50-60 miles per week), but those long trips to see family or friends once or twice per month are really going to get costly.

However, we still take my truck for long trips because it’s just so spacious and we feel much safer than in our other little putt-putt cars. Also, I drive more slowly in the truck even though it has twice the power than our cars.

I’d sell the truck, but it’s the most versatile of all our vehicles. At least we have some 4-bangers to fall back on, but they don’t get much better gas mileage in DC traffic

I now ride my motorcycle much more than I did. I have to plan a little more now that it’s getting colder here. I have a jeep comanche that gets about 17mpg in the city. I don’t drive it much because we use the Honda Element the most. It gets 20something mpg in the city. I can’t take on another car payment right now so I can’t replace the truck until the element is paid off but you can bet I’ll be getting something smaller and more gas efficient.

Nope, I pay about $1 per litre – which works out to about $3.75 per US gallon.

We don’t drive a ton so I have to say that it really hasn’t changed anything for us. We probably put on about 12,000 miles per year.

Interesting, the consenus to my question is “no, not really.” Maybe when it hits $4 a gallon?

I don’t drive less, but I do drive more carefully. I have a Honda Pilot with and “eco” mode where it will shut down half the cylinders when it can. I try to get the eco light to come on as much as possible.
And hello from Santa Cruz. =)
