Savings Tip: Quick Way To Lower Your Cable Bill!
So a while back I called to cancel our Dish Network satellite TV package. We just were not watching it enough to warrant the $39 a month. Which was for the basic package w/ local channels. So now we are back to the good old rabbit ears and DVD movies. Which is fine for us and has actually been a really good thing, but that is another post for another day.
But what was interesting, and what I wanted to pass along today, was the incentives the dude at Dish Network was offering me to stay on as a subscriber. Here is what he offered after I told him I wanted to cancel.
- Free Movie Channels. His first offer was a bunch of free movie channels for free for 3 months.
- Free Channel Package Upgrade. Once I said “No” to the movie channels, he offered me a free upgrade to the Dish 200 package, where we would get another 100 channels for free for 6 months. While the idea of getting Golf TV and the Hallmark was, um, tempting, I still said “No Thanks.”
- Money Off My Current Package. His final and most tempting offer was $10 off my current satellite package for 6 months. This one almost made me stay on, but I still could not justify the monthly expense.
Savings Tip: So if you have Dish Network, and I am guessing Direct TV or any other cable company, call them up and tell them you want to cancel and see what they offer you! I think you will be pleasantly surprised how badly they want your business. It will only take about 5 minutes of your time and will probably save you at least $10 a month!
Have you had success doing this already? I’d love to hear your story!

Yup – We just recently canceled our cable Internet service. We were paying $60 a month. We switched to DSL for $38 a month. When I called to cancel the cable, the last offer they had was for $37 a month for a year. Why couldn’t they offer that in the first place?
This worked for me. I’ve had free HD channels, Free DVR service and $10.00 off my monthly bill for going on two years.
Nice! Wow, free HD….and a free DVR service, that would have been hard for me to pass up if my dude had offered it!!
I’ve done this with my cable company also. I really do want to cancel my basic cable as it will help with my savings and I don’t watch much tv. They offered me $5 a month for cable vs $50 normal price for 6 months when I tried to cancel. I’m still going to cancel in about 6 months and just enjoy cable for $5! I will make a post on this experiance in my blog also
I had a co-worker who had made it an annual event to call the cable company to cancel since the introductory rate was expiring. Every year, year after year, they would extend it. Cable, Dish, and Direct are all in direct competition with little clear edge, so they’ll go a long ways to keep you.
Besides, think about how much of that monthly fee is pure profit. They have room to negotiate.
