Are Frugal People Sexier Than Spenders?September 12, 2013 by Kyle 14 comments • Filed Under Frugal Living
What turns you on? Someone who takes you on a first date to the nicest restaurant in town and orders a $300 bottle of wine, or someone who whips out a Groupon coupon for a 2-for-1 dinner and tells you “Please don’t order anything over the cost of my entree, thanks.” Since you are visiting my blog, I’m guessing you fall somewhere closer to the coupon side of things.
The other day I read an article on MarketWatch.com which asked the age-old question are frugal people more attractive? In other words does Clark Howard get more action than say, Ryan Gosling? According to the survey results, indeed people find frugal folks to be sexier. Awesome, finally there is hope for me! Let’s break this article down shall we…
The study showed that frugal people tend to have more self-control when spending money which is perceived by the opposite sex as a more reliable partner. All other things being equal, this is absolutely true in my opinion. Not to mention the compatibility factor. I have seen relationships end badly because they are not on the same page in terms of money and probably shouldn’t have dated in the first place. If you are frugal by nature you clearly have a “broken picker” if you only date members of the opposite sex who spend money like it was growing on trees and have no self-control..
Savers Tend to be Boring, Really?
“Self control is likely viewed as a force that favors prudence over fun,” says Jenny Olson who co-authored the survey at the University of Michigan. I totally disagree with this one. A person who is prudent with money is not a fun-suck, not by a million miles. Some of the more frugal people I know are also some of the funnest to be around. I think it is because they are living a simpler life that isn’t filled with the trappings of “spending” to have fun. If you have to spend money to have fun all the time it becomes an anti-climatic drag. I am constantly amazed at how many fun activities don’t cost a cent.
Health Benefits of Frugality
The study also showed that frugal people are typically healthier, both mentally and physically. Those in heavy debt and trying to dig out from underneath it, tend to have higher blood pressure and stress levels. I can remember when I was attempting to get out of credit card debt, I got winded walking to the mailbox to collect the bills. I had no time for exercise as I was consumed with trying to pay for my lifestyle. I slept terrible and my mind was never at ease. It clearly makes sense that people with no debt, or those who are actively doing the right things to get out of debt, are going to sleep better and have the right mindset to get the daily exercise our bodies need.
What Do You Find Sexy?
I can honestly say that I find it incredibly sexy that my wife buys clothes from Target, uses online coupons, and prints coupons to use in-store. She analyzes big buying decisions and seeks out only the “stuff” that provides the most value. HOT! HOT! HOT! It just goes to show that deep in our DNA is the desire to seek out those who are steady with finances and worth being with for the long-term. Frugal is where it’s at.
What say you? Is frugal sexy?
