Amazon Sent Me a $339 Item I Didn’t Order…What Happened Next is Crazy

(Updated 1/20/18) Have you ever had something show up at your door from Amazon.com, or another site, that you didn’t order? If you have, it can be a bit of head-scratcher. This happened to me last week when we received an item that Amazon sells for a whooping $339.

I knew I couldn’t just keep it without contacting Amazon first as I figured someone had paid for it and was wondering when it would be showing at their front door. Here is how the whole thing went down and what Amazon told me to do with the expensive item…

Amazon Wrong Item

Huge Box Shows Up at My Door

So last week, a big ol’ Amazon box shows up at our front door and my son tears it open thinking it’s his new school backpack. To his surprise, and disappointment, the box contained a VERY expensive BIG brown comforter set for a full-sized bed.

We all scratched our heads and tried to figure out if my wife ordered it, or maybe it was a gift from someone?

We don’t have a full-sized bed in our home so we were quite perplexed. Once my wife got home, she was equally confused and had no idea why it showed up.

Amazon Has No Record of the Order

So I took to the inter-webs and logged into our Amazon account to see if there was any record of the comforter set. Nada.

So I hit up Amazon live chat and explained the situation to the operator. The only record of the order I had was the UPS sticker on the front of the box as it showed up without a packing slip.

After snapping a pic of the label and getting it to the Amazon rep, she could not find any record of the order anywhere in their system.

What Amazon Told Me To Do

“Keep it.” Yes, Amazon told me to keep the $339 comforter set. Since they had no record of the order, and thus couldn’t create a return label so I could return it, they simply told me it was mine.

But I was like, “I didn’t pay for it” and they were like, “Nothing for you to worry about, I will going to leave a note on your account” in case someone claims the bedding set at which point they’ll offer a refund or replacement.

I figured they’d thank me for my honesty and politely ask me to return it. I guess that’s more of a pain-in-the-ass for them than it’s worth. I wonder at what price point they’d ask me to return the item? $500, maybe $1,000? Anyone know?

The most amazing part of this whole dealio? A quick Amazon search shows this comforter set is being sold for $339. I guess I’ll put it up for sale on eBay unless you know someone who may be interested?

I plan to donate the money earned from the sale to charity. Below is the transcript of my chat session with Amazon and details how the whole thing went down…

We once received a refurbished sewing machine from the same company we had bought a new one from – I guess they confused our address with the person getting their machine repaired. Took FOREVER on the phone to convince them they had sent someone else’s machine to us. They were practically argumentative. They had UPS pick it up.

I ordered a $20 solar light from Sears and received a $75 sander. Called them and they said they didn’t know what I was talking about, they had no record of it. The next day my light arrived. Umm ok …Thanks Sears!

I just received a bunch of items for a Samsung s5 phone, the package was addressed to me but I never ordered it. There is no record of the order on my amazon account and my bank account was never charged for it. Amazon told me I could keep the stuff or get rid of it. I hope someone isn’t sitting around waiting for their stuff to show up.

I just received two things from Amazon (in one package) that I did not order. A face peel and facial cleanser, together they cost about $50. This is the second time this has happened. My daughter once received two silicone baking mats inside her box of stuff she did order.

I just received two packages from Amazon I didn’t order. On the first day, I received a large buck knife and a portable DKnight2 Speaker (about $75 together) then a day later I received an Xbox 360 video game and I don’t even own an Xbox! I wasn’t charged for this anywhere, but I sell stuff on Amazon and I know if a seller sends an item that wasn’t described correctly or they didn’t order, Amazon will not help the seller get it back. So, I guess this is a little bit of Karma as Amazon ripped me off royally about a month ago!

I just received a package from Amazon that I did not order. It was a Nikon D750 camera. When I checked my Amazon account, it did not show up in my orders list, nor did I ever receive the usual email confirming an order. However, when I checked my credit card statement online, I was charged for the camera’s cost of $2,400.00!!! I contacted Amazon and explained the situation, and my conversation with them went almost exactly like Kyle’s (above) except that I won’t get a refund to my credit card until they get the item back. The customer service rep (Indian accent) was able to locate the order number and issue a return label, but she wasn’t able to tell me who had originally placed the order. She was going to send it to “Investigations” so that they could look into it. You can bet that this camera will be going back to Amazon this week!! I wonder if I’ll ever hear anything from “Investigations?”

Nicole

I’m just wondering why you mentioned the rep you spoke to had an Indian accent. Seems irrelevant and a bit of a strange detail to add :S

No it’s not irrelevant because it shows that Amazon uses poorly trained personnel who work for peanuts on the dollar

I work in a call center and guess what? The non americans have better metrics than the americans. When are you, americans, going to understand that the job that the quality of the job that one does has to do with the integrity of the person rather than the nationality? Be humble and accept others can be better than you.

Obviously, she mentioned that the rep was Indian, because sometimes their English is not great at all– therefore can misconstrue the issue being called about! As I’ve experienced many times so don’t get all bunched up about the comment.

the fact is it is often a matter of being able to understand the accent of the person on the other end of the line. it is extremely frustrating when trying to resolve an issue that involves money and frankly if get a call from a telemarketer that I have difficulty understanding, I just hang up.

Hi, Kyle. I am the Darcy who left the comment above on April 4th. Guess what? I just went into my Amazon account to check things out, and there sat a pending order from April 8th for a $2,500.00 Canon camera! The only reason that it hadn’t shipped yet was that it was waiting for updated payment information. Needless to say, I did not place this order! After the first fiasco with the Nikon camera, my credit card company closed my account and issued me a new credit card. I have not yet received that card, so the information on my Amazon account is now invalid. Since the new order (shipping to me and again with no confirming email) was pending, I was able to cancel it online. But now all of this makes me afraid to update my payment information when I get it so that orders do not automatically ship. I changed my Amazon password after the first issue, so I am completely at a loss as to why this is happening. I just thought I would share. Thanks for listening!

The reason they don’t demand it back is because they can’t per FTC law. They are out and the person who ordered it gets refunded or replaced items. Personally, if I were to get a package I would be a “good guy” and attempt to return it . When I received a book from Amazon, I’ll trade for that comforter, that I didn’t order they told me the same thing.

I ordered a showerhead/massager from Amazon a while back, and the spa beads were missing from the order. I contacted them to have my beads sent, and they ended up just crediting my charge card for the entire purchase! They said it was due to the fact that they could no longer get that specific item. At least they are honest, and don’t give you a hard time, like some other companies would. I really appreciate that.

Last week we received a packaged addressed to our 7-year old son. We didn’t order anything and definitely didn’t address anything to him. Opened the box to find 4 laser toner cartridges. Yesterday, I got another package addressed to me and it was a book of Knock Knock jokes. No packing slip, no info other than the shipping labels. The toner appears to have come from a third party associated to Amazon. Nothing in the order history and no odd charges that we can see in our banking. Head-scratcher for sure. On to Amazon, but I imagine they will say keep it like all these prior posts.

I just received a $375 Armani watch from Amazon which I did not order. There is no record of it on my Amazon account or on my credit cards. I was worried about identity theft so I did an online check and everything looked fine. Left me wondering how this all happened. So glad to find I’m not alone here. PS – I was given the option of keeping the watch or returning it and receiving a $10 gift certificate for my troubles. No brainer there. Anyone want a watch?

Jamila

Wow – will this ever end? Received a VM from India lady from Amazon saying she’s sorry I never received my watch and that she will credit my account. As far as I can see this has not happened. Must have my name crossed with someone else’s account?

I ordered a camera at Amazon for $429. I wanted the next level up so much but it cost double the price so I went with the lower model. The two cameras look pretty much identical at first glance but upon closer inspection, the more expensive one has an additional dial and the model # is embossed on the top in tiny print. I received the camera yesterday, and lo and behold, Amazon sent me the camera that cost $799!! Unbelievable, but the manufacturer’s packaging can easily be mistaken for the other. The side of the box says the model # but the front which the merchandiser sees when he or she pulls it from the shelf, does not. The camera’s instruction manual shows the model # clearly but this is inside the box and merchandiser probably doesn’t look at this. Of course, I’ll keep it, its the one I’ve been dreaming to own! :DDD

This just happened to me today. I came home to a package addressed to my husband. No packing slip, just a gift receipt. It was a $250 robe…not something either of us would ever have ordered. I checked my Amazon account…no orders remotely like that. My husband called his bank (we have a Kindle FreeTime account for our niece, so we have to have a card connected) and he did get charged for it. The bank is reversing the charges. cancelled the account and reissued a new card and number, but I’m super angry about this. After reading this thread, I’m not sure I’ll bother contacting Amazon. I did change my password and took that card off. But I still have to have a card connected to the account, so who’s to say it won’t happen again?!

Just happened to me as well! I received a package addressed to someone else about 20 miles away from me. There are no similarities between our names or addresses. It came in a separate Amazon box to the package that I actually ordered.

It ended up being a $60 Steelseries Stratus XL bluetooth controller. Amazon told me to keep it or donate it if I wasn’t comfortable keeping it. It’s actually super high quality and more comfortable than the Xbox One controller I use for my PC. Too bad I don’t have bluetooth support. I might have to buy a bluetooth adaptor. 😀

Hi I received an email saying about an item I was to receive which I didn’t order,I rang them with no joy as I don’t have an account with them, their was a section saying click here if this was not ordered by you but it asked for my Email password so I didn’t bother as I have been a victim of fraud a few times this year

Happened to me yesterday. I ordered $30 dinner set but received $159 Tent. When I called amazon to return this and get dinner set, they said they will send dinner set but I can keep or donate the Tent as they treat such products hazardous to take back. I don’t understand this. Hoping to get my dinner set asap. I need that more than a Tent 🙂

I also received a package I didn’t order from Amazon and it arrived the same day I was getting another package and I was like “why are there two?” (of course I checked my account right away and nothing) The second package contained something I did not order – a used Scholastic workbook for math for grade K.. Haha, I have no kids (i am super bad at math so is someone trying to tell me something?).

It has a ISBN code so I was able to search of it and Amazon has it but only through third-party sellers. The sticker on the package says it came from Amazon Fullfillment in KY which doesn’t make sense if a third party seller sent it??

It is only $5 so I will probably just give it to Goodwill or put it in the reading book libraries that we have in my town that has free books etc for folks to just take.

There are a zilllon codes on this thing so have no idea which one to go to look up – sounds like from the other comments that these odd items that show up at our doorsteps aren’t ordered by anyone and if they are Amazon isn’t going to tell us who!!! Ghosts?? I keep thinking it is joke from someone from my past..

Received a $20 mask that we didn’t order today. From the Amazon Covington KY fulfillment center. No gift or shipping receipt inside and thus no order number. Called Amazon and they couldn’t tell me why it was shipped to me and just advised that I keep it. From searching the web, apparently this happens a lot from the Covington KY center. I’m just sorry that it wasn’t a more expensive item. We’ll give this away.

I had heard that employees in shipping departments steal items by fulfilling a fake order and shipping it to where the occupants are at work all day. They, or a friend, watches for UPS and picks up the package. They either want the item or they want to sell it.

Oddly I was just shipped 2 pairs of new underpants in a package that looked slit open and retaped, I was thinking it was going to be some creepy stalker, or my account got hacked and this was someone trying to put in a small order before ordering something big but after being on a chat with Amazon, they assured me it was their mistake and that my account was secure. They told me to keep it as their gift to me, ha ha, Amazon gave me underpants!

A play kitchen just showed up, billed to me, supposedly ordered by me 5 days ago on Amazon, but I never placed the order. Could my 2 year-old have ordered it when pressing a bunch of buttons randomly on my phone? I cannot imagine how else this could have happened. Will just return it, UPS will come back and pick it up.

I found your post because the same things has happened to us, last week it was an international surge protector, this week it was tennis elbow bands. Called amazon and explained we have no idea where these came from, they aren’t on our order history, not on our wish lists, never items we’ve even looked into and there was no packing slip. They told us to keep them or give them away as worked best for us….. I’m just curious if we will get anything next week too.

How strange? For the last 6 months I have been recieving packages from amazon and ebay addressed to me of routers and modems. Its very strange because I dont even have an amazon account, and as for ebay theres nothing in my order history or charged from my bank account. So far I have recieved 4 routers, 2 modems, and a power cord for a modem through the mail like this.

Just 4 hours ago, I received a new Xbox one limited edition bundle which costs $450 from amazon. I didn’t order it and no charge was taken from my bank account either.
The funny part is that the seller mentioned on shipping label is the one that I bought Strapless Bra from last week, I checked all the product they sell, all women accessaries. So how they gonna send me an Xbox console??
Anyway, I will wait till tomorrow and see if there is any email or call. If not, I will contact amazon to see if there is any way to find out the real customer who is still waiting for his Gears of war 4……

We ordered a Simmons beauty rest mattress. Which was to be delivered Nov 29th it was a 455. Matress. 5. Days after ordered I receive a summons beauty rest in a box I called amazon told them I didn’t order this much more expensive one. 987.00 they had no record didn’t come off my card they told me it was my choice I can return it or keep it but my mattress I did order is still being delivered on 29th. I’ve been good customer n a elderly man my husband helps him out mows his lawn. Well he was sleeping on an inflatable mattress cause he couldn’t afford a new one. We had told him he could have our old one which was still in good condition. But it’s a full size we bought a queen. When we brought over the mattress we ordered on 29th it was like Santa came early he was teary eyed & said no neighbor had ever been so nice as we have. I figured he needed it more than amazon. God will bless amazon & us. We told him what happened he said God does listen. Thank you amazon you made this sweet elderly man day

Tuesday I got 2 packages from Amazon, one was mine that I had ordered and the other one was a nerf gun that I did not order. I was busy, sat it to the side and forgot about it. Wednesday, same thing I got a package of what I had ordered and another box, I just thought why didn’t they put it the same box and opened it to find a children’s book, a pokemon movie and 2 Kindle Fire’s! The boxes have someone else’s name on them, but with my address. I Posted on facebook asking if anyone knows this person and I have also asked in a few buy sell trade groups for my area, these are obviously someone’s presents, but no one know who this person is. I even contacted a friend of mine on the police department and they can find no record of this person in my state. Amazon dose not know why I got the packages, they just said “well that was the address provided”. I do live in an apartment complex and I work for the power company so I was able to look at all the accounts of tenants who have lived here and there is no one. Not really sure what to do, but I don’t want to ruin some kids Christmas! I guess for now they will sit in the box. There is also no packing slip, gift receipt or receipt in the box, just the items, which I thought was odd. I did check my amazon account and there is no suspicious activity , the same with my bank.

I was sent over $250 worth of baby formula and bottle cleaner… I don’t have a baby! I started a chat with Amazon about it and they were a real pain about it….
“10:19 AM PST Amit: Jaclyn, I can’t find any information about this order from our system.
10:20 AM PST Amit: In this case what the best I can suggest for you is that you can return it to the given address.
172 Trade St, Lexington, KY 40511, USA
10:22 AM PST Jaclyn: I really don’t want to pay for return shipping on this item. I did not order it and it will be expensive for me to ship back because it is so heavy.
10:22 AM PST Amit: Okay Jaclyn.
10:23 AM PST Amit: In this case you can keep this item with you or can donate it to someone you want.
10:23 AM PST Jaclyn: Okay thank you.”
Why would I pay return shipping on something I didn’t order??? I’d have to be crazy to do that. Now I have formula for a baby I don’t have. I’ll probably donate it to a woman’s shelter or sell it and give the money to a charity.

This is so weird! Today I had a box from Amazon that arrived addressed to me… with a mini billiards table! I tried contacting Amazon and they told me to keep it. I have no idea what I am going to do with a $70 mini pool table and no idea where it came from. The label seems to have come from a third party distributor. The rep said it’s possible the company sent it to me as a gift but I have never browsed for this item or anything similar before so it makes little sense that they would send it to me?

When Fed Ex delivers an item to the wrong house on mistake they are required to pay the seller for the cost of the lost item. That’s probably why Amazon didn’t care.

Some Guy

I had this happen with an expensive microwave that showed up at my front door. As with your situation, Amazon told me to keep it. I was amazed but hey, that’s pretty cool, right?

Well, to my surprise the next day FEDex showed up looking for the package. I told them Amazon told me to keep it but they said they weren’t leaving until I handed it over and that they were going to call the cops if I didn’t. My point is that just because Amazon tells you to keep something doesn’t mean that some delivery truck driver who made a mistake won’t come around looking for it.

Cathy
Cathy

I have a similar situation with a slight twist. I came home the other day and found that Amazon’s own delivery service had dropped off a package I didn’t order. Neither the name nor address on the package was mine. As far as I know the package was addressed correctly, and this was purely the delivery person’s mistake for leaving it at the wrong place.

If this happened with any other delivery service, I’d contact them and expect that they’d pick it up and redeliver it correctly, so I logged into my Amazon account and chatted with a CS rep and explained the situation. She used the tracking # to find the original order and she scheduled a UPS pickup for the next day (even though this was originally an Amazon delivery), and sure enough, the brown truck came and got the package.

I thought that was the end of it, until today when I got an email from Amazon telling me that my return of item x had been processed and I now have a gift card balance of $23.68! At this point, I don’t know if it’s even worth trying to explain to Amazon that they didn’t owe me this money.

I have been receiving random Amazon packages I did not order for weeks now! I’m so confused — but so glad to see this post and the comments, so I know that it’s not just me! I’ve had two similar experiences. The first time, around Christmas, I was looking at a bunch of toys on Amazon in preparation for Christmas. I received some toys in the mail which I had looked at but not ordered. Weird!
And it just happened again today. And each time my cc was charged without my knowledge.
I am starting to wonder if Amazon’s use of Artificial intelligence has created a sort of “rogue Alexa” inside the system, that is placing orders for people.

Man oh man…

Starting last month, I had all of these problems that you guys are commenting about.

Instead of a camera that was ordered off of my linked card, it was a watch. I have yet to receive my refund and I keep getting items that I didn’t order, nor do they show up in my order history. Heres the crazy thing, I’m not getting charged for these items (aside from the watch) AND items that ive ordered in the past (that I’m currently using), I’m starting to get refunds for them when I didn’t ask for refunds. And they are going onto an Amazon gift card that is linked to my account that I cant remove.

So suffice to say, this is extremely confusing. Aside from the refund for the watch taking forever, I’m not not out any money for the items but I still feel violated/stalked. (poor choice of words I’m sure)

Anyone else having these problems?

I am not sure if it’s generated from Amazon or not, I just assumed as I buy almost weekly on there, but the past six months, almost weekly a package comes and it’s usually weird things, a couple I could use but most are just weird. A bath tub mat, plastic straws with a straw cleaner, a cellphone case for a cellphone I don’t own, tempered glass for a Kindle I don’t own, 2 Medium swimsuits on two different days (I’m a large), 2 different Fitbit watch bands on two different days for specific off-brands and I don’t own one, a large printer cartridge not for my printer, a package of sticks for crafting, a fidget spinner, a hikers sleeping bag, a set of elbow-length black ladies gloves like you’d wear to a ball (I’m saving those for Halloween) a cell phone case that actually did fit my phone, bicycle tire reflectors, a beard trim measurer (I’m a girl) , a set of artist paintbrushes, and the list goes on and on. I have absolutely no idea but it’s kind of fun now to open the package and see how weird it will be this time. There’s never been anything else in the package and if there even is a return address, it’s never the same place, sometimes China, and the address doesn’t give me any clue. The envelopes are usually those yellow padded ones and have never said eBay or Amazon on them, or any company for that matter. I’d guess if they wanted me to “test” their product and give a rating they’d include a link to it or put some type of note in the package, but never, never a clue. I’ve gotten probably 30 things now. Since I buy so much on Amazon, I have to assume it’s generated from there but I’m never charged. Oh and lately it will be addressed to me with the first name of Jeff, or Lucy above my name. I live alone and have lived here 19 years so beats me what’s going on but oh well, it’s kind of fun!

Very bizarre. My 13-year old son received two such a generous package which he thought were his prizes from a techie youtuber’s online giveaway. No packing slip on one, and the 2nd one which we did not open had shipping info that Amazon could not trace. My son did not order (his Amazon activity and gift card balance confirms this) and no one in the family ordered it. The online giveaway site requested for his name, home address, email, and gender; no payment info. We did not know that he entered such contest at that time, only when he received the 1st package, which he thought contained his cool prizes.
HOWEVER, just found out a couple of days later that there were more than a couple of unauthorized and expensive Amazon charges on my credit card account. The CC was linked to my Amazon acct (but not on my son’s; he does not have access to or know how to use credit cards or even checks ). And his name/address is not linked to my address book. My son is very creep-ed out especially now that a 2nd pkg with unknown contents arrived again addressed to him. We are waiting for Amazon to get back to us on how to return those packages.

In checking my son’s Amazon account activity, there was nothing in his order history that indicated that he ordered those pkgs. However, his last legit purchase around 2 weeks ago that was worth around $23 was not posted in his order history. He received the order, no issues there, and his Amazon gift card balance confirmed the recent $23 purchase. But no order history nor email notification from that transaction.

I received an item from Walmart.com that I did not order. Next day I found someone pulled about $2000 from my checking account. Watch out because someone has your information if your getting stuff you didn’t order.

In the past four months I’ve had three things come from Amazon that I didn’t order with no other info coming with them. No one else in the family admitted to ordering them. The first was a negligee sort of thing that’s a one size fits all back in April (hubby thought I had a secret admirer LOL), the second was a bicycle mount for an electronic device that came in June (son put that to use!), and yesterday I got a grill mat.

This morning I decided to call Amazon and see if they could give me a clue where these items came from. I gave the guy the tracking information from the package from yesterday, and this is where it got weird. He said it was from me. I said no way.

He asked if I had another Amazon account, to which I said no, asked if I had another other email addresses (hah! doesn’t everyone?), and said there was another Amazon account with my name, address, email address beginning with the letter “x” (not one of my many email addresses). There was no phone number with the account. Said account does not have any of my credit cards on it, was created in June of 2016, and has made 18 purchases, all from gift cards, that have been sent to various addresses in the US, which included four to me, the first one was from last June – a make-up tote bag I don’t remember.

I asked CS how I could go about getting this account deleted and was told it couldn’t be done. He eventually sent me to a supervisor who gave me the same run around, but said the two step-authentication I already have enabled is the best thing I could do, as not even CS can access my account without a code I give them.

If some strange person is going to use my name and send me things, can’t they at least send me something I’ll use?!?!

Ok, I wondered if I was the only one this was happening too and nope, that’s not the case.
Two weeks ago I received a package from Amazon addressed to me, which is a common occurrence as I frequent Amazon. When I opened it, it was a mustard yellow shower curtain that I didn’t order. No packing slip inside. I immediately thought that someone I know must have selected the wrong ship to address. I queried my sisters and both said no, but thought it was hilarious. I phone Amazon customer service and was told due to privacy they cannot share with me who sent the item and suggested it may be a gift and to keep it. haha….I have glass shower doors, can’t even make use of this item.

I threw the package in the spare bedroom and didn’t really think about it again. Then Two days ago another package arrives, again I get weekly if not daily packages so I assumed it was something I ordered. Nope…this time a fancy HDMI cable, same scenario no packing slip, shipped from an Amazon affiliate. Once again, I phone my sisters and call them out “really you guys aren’t messing with me?” both deny knowing anything about it and this time and let me know how funny they think it is and that if it were them they would send me something that I would find funny.

Another phone call to Amazon, this time the CS rep is willing to research the packages with the shippers tracking numbers to locate the accounts they came from. He finds them and tells me the orders were placed on two different accounts and they only have my name and address as the shipping information. Additionally the accounts are incomplete and have different names on them. He verifies my credit card information is not on either of the accounts but is not able to remove my information from them. He said he will escalate the issue to be investigated and again states I can keep the items.

So weird, I asked if this could be someone testing a stolen credit card and he said he wasn’t sure but wouldn’t think they’d ship it to my address, that they’d ship it to themselves.

One of my friends suggested the stolen credit card idea as well, but put a spin on it and said what If they are camping out in your neighborhood waiting for packages to be delivered…WHAT?? that is scary, I certainly hope that isn’t the case. They picked the wrong house if they are hoping to snag packages left on the porch, I get so many packages that I am always checking and I work from home a good majority of the time and haven’t ever had a package stolen from the door.
