IKEA is known for offering affordable furniture and home accessories to elevate your home’s style. But furniture is BIG and the idea of getting it to your home can be daunting…plus HOW MUCH will the delivery end up costing you. So, this begs the question, does IKEA offer free delivery? Unlike many stores these days, IKEA does NOT offer free shipping on anything. Here’s everything you need to know about IKEA delivery, from pricing, to some hacks to lessen your delivery cost, and much more.

Does IKEA Deliver? Here's How It ALL Works Plus Some Hacks to Save

So…Does IKEA Deliver?

Yes.

IKEA offers a range of delivery service offers depending on the size of the order.

Although you can choose to pick up your items in-store, you can also choose delivery to your home.

Small order deliveries start at $5.99 and ships things like picture frames, hangers, and other easily shippable products.

Inevitably, larger deliveries cost more to ship. For large contactless deliveries to your doorstep, expect to pay at least $49.

If you want your furniture delivered to a specific room in your home, expect delivery rates to start at $69.

Therefore, depending on the size of your order, and where you want it delivered (i.e. at your doorstep vs. in a specific room) will impact your delivery costs.

What Does It Actually Cost Then?

As discussed above, the size of your order impacts the cost of your delivery.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect to pay for IKEA delivery:

– Small order delivery: $5.99

– Large order Doorstep delivery: Starts at $49, goes up the further your zip code is located from an IKEA store.

– Large order In-Home Delivery to a specific room: Starts at $69, will also increase depending on your home’s location.

When checking out from the IKEA website, you’ll be notified of your exact delivery fees after you enter your zip code.

How Many Large Items Can I Get Delivered For My $49?

I called IKEA directly and asked this question.

I was told that your $49 delivery fee will typically cover one full room of your home, so it’s save to assume 3-4 items maximum.

I was also told that once your order size exceeds 500 pounds, you’ll automatically be switched to the $69 in-home delivery option.

Hack Alert: Sign-Up For IKEA Family

By signing up for the free IKEA Family rewards program you’ll get a sweet delivery discount.

Not only will you score a 5% discount on ALL in-store purchases, but you’ll only have to pay $39 for the $49 delivery service.

Can I Get All IKEA Items Delivered?

You can get MOST of the items that IKEA sells delivered.

The only items that may not have delivery options include seasonal or special edition items.

Do They Deliver for Free from IKEA.com?

No.

Unlike many other stores, IKEA does not offer any free shipping.

Therefore, if buying online from IKEA, it’s important to factor in delivery costs.

What Sized Items Can Be Delivered From Their Site via UPS or FedEx?

A way to save money on delivery fees is by using third-party shipping and delivery to pick up your IKEA order like UPS or FedEx.

However, if you want to go this route, it’s important to understand that both UPS and FedEx do have size and weight limits.

Below are the size and weight limits for UPS:

– Packages up to 150 pounds.

– Packages up to 108 inches long.

Below are the size and weight limits for FedEx:

– Packages up to 150 pounds.

– Packages up to 119 inches by 165 inches long.

Can I Use a Service Like TaskRabbit to Deliver My IKEA Stuff?

TaskRabbit is not a delivery service, but rather a platform that offers “handyman” type services from home repairs to furniture assembly, and more.

Therefore, TaskRabbit won’t deliver your IKEA stuff.

However, you can definitely hire someone from TaskRabbit to assemble your IKEA furniture.

Can I Use a U-Haul Truck to Pick Up My IKEA Stuff?

Yes.

You can technically pick up your items in-store using a U-Haul truck; however, depending on how much you are buying and what size your items are, it may be cheaper to just pay IKEA’s delivery fees.

So, be sure to compare how much it costs to rent a U-Haul vs paying for your IKEA stuff to get delivered.

Is Your IKEA Out of Stock? When Does IKEA Restock Their Inventory?

It’s no secret that IKEA is feeling the crunch from the global supply shortage and it’s gonna last for a while. So you may notice that your local IKEA is out of stock on some pieces of furniture or even home décor items. This begs the questions when does IKEA restock their inventory and can you shop on specific days of the week to get “first dibs” on items before they’re out of stock yet again. I went out and tried to find some answers…hope this information helps all of you IKEA shoppers out there.

Is Your IKEA Out of Stock? When Does IKEA Restock Their Inventory?

When Exactly Does IKEA Restock?

The short answer is it depends.

The long answer is a little more complicated and depends on the size and popularity of the item.

Let’s break it all down and make some sense of IKEA’s supply issues.

How Often Does IKEA Restock Large Items?

Every 5 – 7 days.

When it comes to large furniture items like desks, bookshelves, couches, beds, etc., IKEA restocks these items about once a week.

But the problem recently is that they can’t replenish stock if they don’t physically have it.

And due to supply holdups and lack of truck drivers some popular IKEA items take weeks to restock.

This is especially true for home office desks, chairs, and furniture as the demand has soared in the past year as more people are working from home.

Also, while many aren’t currently working form home, they are setting up a home office just in case they need to in the future.

What About Small Stuff Like Lamps and Décor?

Every 1 – 2 days.

Smaller items like lamps, storage products, kitchen stuff, and home décor are restocked every day or two, or when bins are empty.

But obviously restocking can only happen if IKEA has stock available, which is often a problem on more popular items.

The same can be said for “smart home” electronics sold at IKEA.

New stock of electronics arrives at the IKEA warehouse every couple days and is stocked as inventory levels grow low.

It’s been my experience that electronics at IKEA are not seeing the same shortages as the more popular bookshelves, desks, and furniture.

How Often Do They Stock The As-Is Section?

Most IKEA stores stock the As-Is section as items are returned to the warehouse.

According to DealsPlus, always shop the As-Is section on Mondays as you’ll get first dibs on weekend returns which is when most people return items.

If you’re not familiar, the As-Is section is stuffed with clearance deals on things that people have returned.

Some items may be damaged, half-built, or have a scratch, but they are ALWAYS a great deal and a great way to save money.

Can I Check If Something at IKEA in In-Stock?

YES.

IKEA has a cool little feature on their website called Product Stock Availability that lets you look on the product page to see if your local IKEA stocks a particular product.

You’ll quickly learn if the item is either available, out-of-stock, or low in-stock.

If the IKEA product is out of stock, you can create a SMS text alert or email alert and get notified immediately when it’s back in stock which is really handy.

See the screenshot above to see what this feature looks like.

3 Things To Do If Item is Out of Stock at IKEA:

1. Check Online – Often times the IKEA website will stock smaller items more frequently then your local warehouse. You stand a good chance of buying it online and having it sent directly to your house.

2. Check a Different IKEA – If you live in a large metroplex, often times a nearby IKEA will have vastly different stock. They just might have the item in-stock that you’re looking for.

3. Get a Text Message or Email When Item is Back In-Stock – Easily sign up for this feature on the particular IKEA product page of the item that’s out-of-stock.

IKEA Return Policy: All Your Questions Answered on One Page

IKEA has been the world’s largest furniture maker since 2008. The liberal IKEA return policy is no doubt a big part of their popularity among shoppers. But as with any return policy, there are always some nuisances that aren’t answered on the company’s website and typically require a phone call to the store. To alleviate that phone call, and make your life a little easier, here’s everything you need to know about their return policy.

IKEA Return Policy: All Your Questions Answered on One Page

How Many Return Days Do I Have at IKEA?

365 return days to be exact.

Yes, you have exactly 1-year from your original purchase date to bring items back to IKEA.

They call it their “No-Nonsense” policy and it’s pretty darn generous.

Do I Need My IKEA Receipt to Return Items?

As of October 22, 2020 you need your receipt to make a return.

If you don’t have your receipt, IKEA can try to use one of the following methods to find your purchase: Credit or debit card, gift card number, or an order number (if applicable).

If they’re unable to find any trace of your purchase, ask that they issue you a merchandise credit for the lowest selling price within the past 365 calendar days.

They often will if you’re polite.

Any Exceptions to the 365-Day Return Policy?

Yes, there are a few big exception.

– Mattresses: If you purchase a mattress from IKEA, and don’t like it, you can’t simply return it for a refund.

You’ll have to exchange it for another mattress and you can only do this once within a 365-day window.

– Gift Cards: You cannot return gift cards to IKEA. You’ll have to sell them through a site like Raise.com if you want to get some money for them.

 – Plants: These cannot be returned.

– Cut Fabric: Measure twice, cut once as cut fabric cannot be returned.

– Custom Countertops: These also cannot be returned.

– As-is Products: These usually are sold at a discount and hence cannot be returned.

What If the Furniture Is Already Assembled?

Not a problem.

So if you finally get your stuff home (and spend an entire weekend assembling it) you can still return it to IKEA if you change your mind or it has a defect.

No questions asked but they do suggest you try and first disassemble at home if you can.

After you return it, they’ll put it in the “assembled” discount section for bargain shoppers to grab.

They state that items must be in unused and salable condition.

But the term “unused” is very subjective in this case. Technically, when you put a bookcase together and throw a book on it, it is used.

Let me know in the comments below if you’ve had trouble returning items to IKEA because of this.

From what I’ve read online, IKEA is fairly generous in what they term as “used” and “salable” and will take most items back without a hassle.

Do I Need the Original Box to Return an Item?

No, you don’t need the original packaging or box to return items.

I hit up IKEA live chat to verify this and was told, “you can return it in any box properly.”

Might be a good idea to keep the box if you haven’t assembled it yet as it’ll make returning it easier.

Can I Return Washed Bedding?

From the comments, it seems you can return washed items as someone returned washed cushions without a problem.

I’m guessing if the washed item lost color, or seems defective, they would be much more likely to take it back.

Can I Return Clearance, Bargain Corner, or “As-Is” Items?

Yes, you can return them all.

This means you have nothing to lose when buying something that’s already assembled and marked down.

Take it home, try it out, and if you don’t like it, just return it to the IKEA warehouse for a full refund.

What Are My Options After 365 Days?

Unfortunately, you don’t have any return options after 365 days.

You’ll have to sell your IKEA items via Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, or a yard sale.

What About Returning Online Purchases?

When buying items from the IKEA website, your return options are slightly different.

Specifically, you only have 14 days after your purchase to return items via the mail, or home pickup for large items.

After 14 days, you’ll have to return online purchases to the IKEA warehouse.

Be sure to keep your online receipt or packing slip to make the return go smoothly.

Note: Items bought in-store CANNOT be returned via the mail or online. They must be brought back to your local IKEA.

What About Returning a Gift to IKEA?

If you have the gift receipt, no problem.

Simply return the item and receive store credit for the item’s purchase price.

I was told that if you ask for cash, instead of store credit, that may be okay.

Apparently there’s no policy in place either way and it’s left up to the discretion of the individual store.

If you don’t have the receipt, it becomes very difficult to return the item as they won’t even give you store credit.

I was told by an IKEA representative that the “purchase holder will need to contact IKEA or take the item back to the store as they have purchased the item.”

Ask the Reader: Have you used IKEA’s return policy in the past? Was it as awesome as it sounds or am I missing something?
