Blog Spotlight: 10 Questions with J$ of Budgets are Sexy.com
Today’s blog spotlight participant is a blogger who has a style all his own, which is a big reason behind his success. Budgets are Sexy.com is one of those blogs that I love to visit because you never know what you’re going to get.
One day J$ will educate ya, the next day he’ll entertain ya, and the next you’ll laugh at loud sitting in your cubicle on an otherwise gloomy day. That ain’t easy folks.
Super stoked that he agreed to play along today. Now on to the interview…
10 Questions With J$ of Budgets are $exy.
Q: Describe your blog in 5 sentences or less?
J$: How about in one? 🙂 A site that starts positive conversations about money. (Okay, two) Which is all about motivating people to STOP and pay attention to their finances for a few seconds a day to make sure they’re going in the general direction of their goals.
Q: What makes your blog different from all the rest?
J$: That I try to be funny? And curse? And rap? And say anything else I pretty much want since having “sexy” in the title allows me to get away with it all? 😉
Q: What would I be surprised to find in your refrigerator right now?
J$: O’Doul’s non-alcoholic beer! I got it for my wife who’s currently pregnant with baby money #2 (woo!), and now – 3 months later – it’s still sitting there just waiting to be drunk, haha… I’ve taken a few sips of it and honestly couldn’t tell the difference, but I won’t be drinking the entire case any time soon 😉
Q: If you were deserted on a desert island and could pick one music CD to bring, what would it be? (assuming you had a CD player and electricity )
J$: At first I was going to say Jimmy Buffet’s “Songs You Know From Heart,” but I reckon I’d get mighty tired of that fast considering that record always makes you FEEL like you’re on a beautiful little island anyways, haha… So instead I choose Wyclef Jean’s “The Carnival.” It’s upbeat, fun, has some slow jams on it (remember “Gone ’till November?“) and just overall makes me pretty happy. I’d choose that, on LP if possible.
Q: When and why did you first start blogging?
J$: I started blogging for two reasons: 1) I had been addicted with reading other financial blogs for a few months and realized no one out there had a “voice” like me, and 2) I didn’t want to waste my precious time on MySpace anymore… That tells you how long ago I got started too 😉 Every co-worker around me was goofing off all around the web or on IM (instant messenger), so I figured I might as well make myself useful and try out blogging for a bit… And here we are almost 6 years later!
Q: What post on your blog best depicts the essence of you?
J$: Hmm….. I would say either the one where I got fired, or the one where I break down Lorde’s “Royals” song and relate it to personal finance 🙂
Q: What blog or website influenced you the most when you started?
J$: Oh man, MyMoneyBlog.com all the way. I just loved how transparent he was with showing everyone his entire net worth each month, that I decided to do the same and haven’t missed a month since. There’s not many bloggers out there that are willing to do that (showing the world where all their money is), and I find it to be one of the best parts of financial blogging… No one in the real world will ever show you this!
Q: Who would play you in a movie about your life, and why?
J$: Haha… This is an easy one: Ty Pennington from Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Not in the looks department exactly – although we’re both tall with spiky hair – but more in the “I’m hyper and bouncing all over the place cuz I love people and socializing and being all OUT THERE – aghhhhh!!!!” type way, haha… And I actually got a chance to take on his role a little when we were doing Love Drop, our philanthropy project, where we traveled the country showing up on people’s door steps and surprising them with money and gifts to better change their lives 🙂 It was pretty cool.
Q: When it comes to blogging, what is your biggest pet peeve?
J$: Probably when people bitch and moan all the time and I come away from reading their site in a crap mood. We all have bad days and like to vent here and there – after all, sometimes those make for the more juicier blog posts! – but if all you’re doing is putting out more negativity in the world with no sense of purpose, then I find myself clicking away and never coming back. I get enough of that reading/watching the news so I certainly don’t need any more.
Q: What is your favorite breakfast cereal and why?
J$: Lucky charms! They’re magically delicious!
(Kyle again) I love ‘Gone til November’, one of those songs that I remember what was going on in my life when I first heard it. Also, I think I should change my site to Rather Be Sexy.com, just think of what I could get away with! Thanks J$, now go check out his ‘About‘ page to learn even more.
