Rakuten Vs. TopCashBack Review: Which Should You Use and Why?

As I’ve written about before, I’m a huge fan of cashback websites. I mean who doesn’t love free money back on stuff you’d be buying anyways, right? In recent years, two sites have really distinguished themselves in my eyes. In terms of high cashback rates, and strong customer service, both Rakuten and TopCashBack have risen to the top of the “cashback world”. So I figured it was time to throw them in the ring and let them duke it out. Here’s my unbiased Rakuten review and TopCashBack review along with analysis of who wins this hard-fought battle.

Rakuten Vs. TopCashBack Review: Which Should You Use?

TopCashBack Review:

TopCashBack started in the UK back in 2005 and has brought their awesomeness to the U.S. in recent years.

So you might be asking yourself “How does TopCashBack work exactly?” Well, here’s the skinny…

  • Free to register. Once you register for free, you simply start all of your online shopping via their website, browser extension, or mobile app. Important: Be sure to authenticate your account by clicking the link in your “Welcome Email” to make sure you get your cash back.
  • They offer cashback at over 4,400 online retailers. Top merchants include Amazon (up to $10 back), Levi’s (10% back), Sam’s Club (up to 15% back), Gap brands (4% back), Macys.com (6% back), American Eagle (4% back), and Overstock.com (5% back).
  • Coupons? Heck yeah, they offer a ton of coupon codes that you can use to stack your savings.
  • Cashback Guarantee. They have something called a “Highest Cashback Guarantee”. So if you find that another cashback site is offering a higher rate for a particular retailer, they’ll happily match it.
  • Click Smart. When using TCB, make sure you click through their site so a cookie is implanted on your computer and can correctly track your purchase. If you have cookies disabled, you won’t get cashback. Also, if you go searching for a coupon code on a different site before completing your purchase, your cookie will probably get erased by the coupon site. DON’T do it. Only use the coupons that TCB provides.

Also, they don’t have a minimum account balance required for withdrawals and you can take money out whenever you want.

Once your cashback hits the pending status, you’re free to withdraw any amount.

Why TopCashBack Rocks:

  • They give all their commissions BACK to their users. TopCashBack rocks because they give ALL of the commissions they earn from your purchases back to you. So if Amazon pays them 8% on your purchase, you get 8% back. They’re the only cashback site that currently does that. They make their revenue on advertising and charging retailers to be “above the fold” on their site and app.
  • Cash out with American Express or a Gift Card. When you’re ready to cash out your TCB account, consider the American Express Reward Card as payment. Why? Because they’ll add an extra 3% to your payout amount for doing so. Total no-brainer. They also offer special gift card payouts. For example, right now you can choose an Amazon gift card and get an extra 3%.

Here are a few ways TCB could even be more bodacious.

How TopCashBack Could Be Better:

  • Rarely Offer Sign-Up Bonus. A few times a year they’ll give you a bonus for signing up, but not regularly.
  • Make Cashback Guarantee easier to use. They give you 7 days after your purchase to file a claim if you find a higher cashback rate on another site. But…you must prove the rate was higher on another cashback site on the day of your purchase. This will require you to somehow take a time-stamped screenshot of some sort. For smaller purchases, this sounds cumbersome and more trouble than it’s worth.

OK, now let’s answer some of the concerns I’m getting in the comments section…

TopCashBack Tips For Success:

Some shoppers are having trouble getting their purchase to track properly with TCB, prompting some folks to wonder if TopCashBack is legit or not.

So to help everyone out and to ensure that are INDEED legitimate, here are the main reasons why your purchase is NOT being tracked correctly.

Make sure you follow these rules SO YOU GET PAID.

  • Not Logged In – Make sure you are logged into TopCashBack before you shop.
  • Visited Another Site First – Do NOT click on another cash-back site before going to TopCashBack.
  • Didn’t Complete Purchase in 1 Session – If you don’t add items to your online shopping cart (and make the purchase) in one shopping session, your order won’t track.
  • Used Invalid Payment Method – Don’t pay with gift cards or reward points as they are NOT eligible for cashback.
  • Browser Cookies Not Enabled – Make sure you enable cookies before you use ANY cashback site.
  • Returned Items – Keep in mind that you won’t earn cashback on items you return.

Rakuten (Formerly Ebates) Review:

Since 1998, Rakuten has been giving money back to their registered users whenever they shop online.

Here’s exactly how it works.

  • Free to register. Once you register for free (and get a $10 bonus), you simply start all your online shopping via Rakuten and start earning up to 40% cashback from over 2,500 online retailers.
  • Stack your savings with coupons. They have a ton of coupons available, over 10,000 as a matter of fact, that you can stack on top of your cash back rates for extra savings.
  • Sounds too good to be true? This is a common misconception of cashback sites. Rakuten works be receiving a commission of the retailer when a shopper makes a purchase, typically between 3% and 18%. Rakuten will then turn around and give a chunk of that commission to their user and keep the rest as profit.
  • Do you have to shop via their website? No. You can also shop via their mobile app as well as through their browser extension which they call their “Cash Back Button”.
  • Top Merchants: Nike (6% back), Kohl’s (2% back), Macys.com (2% back), Bass Pro (3.5% back), American Eagle (2% back), and Lowes.com (1% back).
  • How do you get paid? Every 3 months you’ll get paid via a check or Paypal, your choice. A few times a year you’ll also get an option to redeem via an Amazon gift card. Your account must reach at least $5.01 to qualify for payment.

Here’s a breakdown of how Rakuten rocks and how it could be better.

Why Rakuten Rocks:

  • Sign-Up Bonus: Get a $10 Welcome Bonus when you register and spend $25 or more via Rakuten.
  • Cashback available on in-store purchases too. The in-store cashback option at Rakuten is exclusive to only them. Works like this: 1) Add your credit and debit card to your account. 2) Find an In-Store Cash Back offer you like and link it to your card. 3) Pay with your linked card in stores and get Cash Back added to your account.
  • Double cashback stores. Every week Rakuten rolls out a bunch of retailers offering 2x their normal cashback rate. For example, they’re currently offering Walmart (4% back), Dell (12% back), and Under Armour (8% back).

Get in the habit of always taking a look at their “double cashback retailers” to see if you can score twice the cash back in your Rakuten account.

How Rakuten Could Be Better:

No Rakuten review would be complete without some analysis of how their service could be better.

  • Missing some stores. They’re missing a few big name retailers. After some research, the biggest names that don’t offer cashback include Home Depot, Pottery Barn, Williams-Sonoma, Adidas, Apple Store, and Durham Sports.

So Who Wins This Cashback Battle?

Rakuten and TopCashBack both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Rakuten has less retailers overall that offer cash back, but they have the cool in-store cashback feature that’s lacking with TCB.

Rakuten has fantastic cashback rates via their limited time “Double” cashback offers. TCB will match those high Rakuten rates, but they require you to fill out an online form in order to get the cashback rate match.

Because a combination of both sites would equal the PERFECT cashback site, I recommend signing up for both Rakuten and TopCashBack.

That way you can check both sites regularly to find the highest rates available, score in-store cashback (with Rakuten), and utilize favorable payout bonuses (with TCB).

In other words, play one site against the other and come out a winner every time you shop.

Ask the Reader: What cashback site is your favorite? Or do you like paying full-price for some reason?

Thank you for the comparison. Actually, the free registration at Ebates won me over, as I could check out their services anytime. I think it’s a great marketing trick, as it is a good incentive and once you see the quality of their services, you don’t really need a change. They get you for good 🙂

Hi Peter,

We do have free registration over here at TopCashback.com as well! As soon as you have some payable cashback in your account, this is yours to withdraw whenever you choose!

Thanks,
Jack

Used CB sites for over 10yrs. Ebates offers lower rates but CS is better and CB process has proved far more accurate compared to TCB. Consider the fact getting burned on one big purchase means your effective cashback is 0%. I got burned on one big purchase from TCB and their is no recourse. The 100% payout model TCB has a fatal flaw… They DON’T care if you get paid because you getting paid has zero outcome on their bottom line. This generally results in being indifferent to your concerns. So a TCB vs. Ebates discussion really is high inconsistent rates vs lower reliable returns discussion.

Hi Will,

We do rely on the payment being received from the retailer you purchased with in order to place any cashback in your account at payable status. Although this does mean it can take slightly longer to earn your cashback, we are able to offer higher rates because of this as we pass on everything we can to you!

If you have any trouble with the cashback tracking to your account or being awarded, please do be aware that we have the missing cashback claims system where you can chase this up further.

Thanks,
Jack

Totally agree. I got screwed on a $200 purchase at Walmart and they were totally worthless. I’d ask what what happened and why, and they would come back with an answer that didn’t even apply to the question. Happened over and over. Avoid TCB if you want to avoid total frustration.

justin

Completely agree. Top cash back is horrid. You are taking a chance of not getting any cash back when you use them. I have never had an issue with Ebates in this matter. I would not recommend Top Cash Back. If you want to earn cash back guaranteed, do not use Top Cash Back. I just experienced it with them, “chase down” your claim. Yea right. I allegedly “mis clicked” “didn’t clear my cookies prior to purchase” and or used a coupon code. If you aren’t using coupon codes online, you are losing out on savings. Savings that are a lot more than top cash back.

Alyssa

I have used both Ebates and TopCashback….hands down winner for me is Ebates. Yes, they do not have as many retailers but are much more consistent in granting cash back to users. I have used TopCashback for 8 months and have gotten burned 10 times in this short time. After I submitted a missing cash back claim, they decline it. They use excuses not to grant cash back due to using promo codes, not clearing cookies, not able to grant when using pick up in store, etc. I’ve NEVER had an issue with any of these issues going through Ebates. They post within 12-24 hours of purchase and pay out within 90 days. I can use promo codes and pick up in store after ordering on-line. Just wanted to pass on my experience with both sites. Happy Shopping!

Hi Alyssa,

I’m sorry that you feel this way, we do try to add in to the terms and conditions any details that might stop you from earning cashback so it’s always worth a read of these before you continue to shop.

If you do feel that your cashback has been declined incorrectly though after lodging a claim, please do let us know on a support ticket and we can take a further look into why this reason was given.

I hope this helps,
Jack

Jack, you’re just PR trying to save this company’s image. Just bail from that sinking ship before you lose any credibility you have left!

When does an electronic rebate website not live up to its name? When its name is TopCashBack!

When the expected cash back payout is denied and becomes zero. No matter how much higher your “promised” reward is, if it is not paid, then it is clearly not higher.

I have now encountered this not eligible for cash back problem on three occasions with TopCashBack and it has cost me in excess of $10. The loss of this cash back essentially eats into the other rewards earned, and I would have been better off using a different service that paid at a lower rate and would have honored all rewards.

The scripted answers from TopCashBack customer service reps always blames someone other than TopCashBack. Either it is me … must not have cleared cache, must not have cookies enabled, etc. etc. or it is the merchant’s fault … they are not honoring the reward, you must have done something wrong, you must not have linked directly from our site, you must have already had items in your cart, etc., etc. … we know that the merchants are always accurate and correct. We are only a conduit for the merchants, we, TopCashBack, hold no sway over the merchants. Oh, but we do process a lot of transactions successfully, sorry about yours.

Well, it is not worth my while to continue with TopCashBack. Ebates may have lower percentage payouts, but they ALWAYS pay out! Every dispute that I have had with Ebates has been settled in my favor – a huge difference from my treatment at TopCashBack.

So, I will no longer use TopCashBack. It is a shame.

Jack - TopCashback Support

Hi Murs,

I am sorry to hear that this is the case. Please do be aware that any reasons you are given on a missing cashback claim, have most likely been given to us by the retailer. Until we chase this up through a claim for you, we don’t get given a reason as to why the amount was declined, but it is something we are happy to chase up for you! As we do rely on the payment from the retailer, we need them to pass this over in order to award the amount in your earnings.

We do monitor the retailers on our website and keep an eye out for any general issues when it comes to the tracking of cashback. If you are unhappy with the reason provided on your claim or don’t feel that it applies to you, please do feel free to send in a support ticket to us and we can take a further look into that for you.

I hope this helps,
Jack

Couldn’t agree more with some of the other commenters. Topcashback.com is a scam of a service. You have about a 50% chance of actually getting cash back from them. Here’s what they told me regarding one of my claims. “Please do note that cashback is never guaranteed, and cashback should always be regarded as a bonus that you could receive.” Seriously? Never, ever had a problem on ebates.com with any claims. I will never use Topcashback.com again.

Jack - TopCashback Support

Hi Andy,

We do ask that members treat cashback as a bonus as this will prevent our members from making a purchase with a retailer that they wouldn’t have otherwise bought from. If you are having trouble with gaining cashback through your account with us then please feel free to send in a support ticket (www.TopCashback.com/help/54) and we’d be happy to offer you some tips as well as having a look at your account.

I hope this helps,
Jack

Topcashback is HORRIBLE! I would NOT recommend their site to ANYONE! They rarely track your purchase, and while they do give you the option to submit a claim for your missing cashback, they have a 0% success rate at giving you the money you were supposed to receive (but again, their crappy site failed to track). On top of that, you wait on average of 3 months to even hear back from them about your missing transaction. Ebates gets back to you within a few days, I love their customer service. In order to make up for their awful service topcashback has appeared to offer the highest rates for cashback – but don’t be fooled, you’ll only receive your cashback mayyybe 1/3 of the times you use their site. So all in all – Ebates may offer lower rates, but they almost always properly track your purchase, so in reality, you’ll still earn more with Ebates. Stay away from topcashback if you don’t like being frustrating with customer service who doesn’t care about you or helping you.

TopCashback Support

Hi Angela,

I’m sorry that you feel this way and I can understand your frustration if your claims are being declined after waiting for them to be chased up. However, it might be worth contacting us on a support ticket (www.TopCashback.com/help/54). If your claims are being declined a lot of the time then this is a decision coming from the retailer and most likely a term and condition isn’t being met for the cashback to be awarded. If you contact us about this then we can hopefully help to point out what’s going wrong with your purchases. I can assure you though that we do see a lot of claims coming back to us from most of our retailers with positive outcomes or a reason why it has been declined.

I hope this helps but let me know if you need anything.

Thanks,
Jack

I am new to TCB and my experience is horrible. After seeing their offers I went ahead and made a QAtar airways purchase and i was supposed to get 100$+ cash back. they never posted to my account and so horrible. I dont TRUST them. Ebates percentage may be less, but WORTH and Genuine.

I filed a complaint. I Am pretty sure, I wentt though TCB site to QATAR site and booked.
TCB response as below, takes 2 months to get a REPLY . If i dont get this Cash back, I will NEVER EVER shop on TCB and this is frustrating.

After Sep 22, no response and no customer care number, COMPLETE FRUSTRATION, I am waiting to get a FINAL ANSWER and based on my answer, I will let all customers know my experience!

Hi there,
Your Missing CashBack claim has now been submitted to Qatar Airways (via their affiliate network or representative management agency who run their online programme for them).

Please understand that this process is likely to take from four weeks to several months (often longer with contract/policy based transactions) to complete, and we may not be in a position to update you until the final decision has been made.

We ask members to remain patient during this time, if we do receive an update or we require your intervention we will get in contact with you via this system.

Kind Regards

I’ve been using E-bates for a very long time and tried TCB for about a year now. This past November, I did a lot of Black Friday on-line shopping. I bought $300 from Walmart with a 8% rebate via TCB. After filing a “missing cashback claim”, they reported back that they had no record of the transaction. My effective rebate was now 0%. I am still waiting on cashback from another pending transaction from over 10 weeks ago. Once I get the payment on that, I will close the account. I’ve only had a few issues with E-bates over the years and their CS corrected the problem immediately to my satisfaction.

TopCashback support

Hi S Simon,

We do pass over any cashback that the retailer is reporting to us and place this in your earnings. If this isn’t the case or it’s been found that you aren’t eligible for cashback then this is a decision which has come from the retailer. We are happy to chase up any earnings for you but without payment from the retailer, we are unable to offer cashback but this is partly why we are able to offer higher rates to our members. Since we wait for payment from the retailer and always pass as much as we can on to yourself.

Thanks,
Jack

Jbp

Topcashback sucks, period. Some of the CB doesn’t pay until 13 weeks after the transaction. I had 2 missing CB and both time they took 3 months to answer, and denying the claim saying I did not use their referral link (which I know I did). Got paid every time and quickly with Ebates. Not sure if they keep the rewards from merchant for themselves or if they are just incompetent but either way: bye TCB!

TopCashback support

Hi Jbp,

We do try to make members aware of the time it can take for cashback to move through to payable by offering you statistics before clicking through our links as well as the estimated payable speed on your earnings. Waiting for the retailer to pay us, allows us to offer higher rates of cashback to our members. We do need to wait for payment from the retailer but it means that we can pass it all on to yourself when we do.

Our Customer care team are always happy to help and we pass on any cashback we receive, to our members.

Thanks,
Jack

Yeah so far my biggest complaint is the process time. I thought cool, I can withdraw money Bt time. Well not really since it sits in pending forever. I have an Oct order sitting in pending and it’s now Dec. Ebayes, ibotta , Shopkick, and Swagbucks are my other go-to sites. They all have mobile shopping options but some have very few merchants. With ibotta you can earn cash back while building toward a goal. The other day I did 3 online orders to fulfill a $2 bonus.

Michael Doherty

I hate TopCashBack. The site is cumbersome. Payouts are hard to get. They are nearly impossible to communicate with. They don’t answer straight up questions. They seem to find every scheme possible to block or slow your payout when the time finally comes to be able to get it. AVOID THEM AT ALL COST. After I get my payout on the books, I am done with them forever!

TopCashback support

Hi Michael,

Would you like to send in a support ticket and direct this to myself? I’d be happy to take a look into your account and see what’s happening here or send me a private message on our Facebook page as I also monitor this.

I’ve tried searching for your account by name and think that I found it. I went ahead and made some adjustments on the issue from the support ticket but feel free to contact me through either of the above channels if this isn’t fixed and I’ll take another look.

Thanks,
Jack

I have never had too much trouble with Top Cash Back. I actually love their site. I started purchasing a lot more stuff online just so I could get the rebates. Sometimes things take longer, but they warn you about that ahead of time and I think that only makes sense. There is a lot of ways to scam these companies out there. There were a few that took way longer than they should have; I emailed them and I think I called once. They straightened it out that week.

I really appreciate their service and try to use them frequently. I also did cash out and had no problems getting the gift cards.

Brad Christman

First experience, bad experience with TCB. I purchased a Dell computer via TCB while the site had a 20% cash back offer in May 2018. When the purchase showed on my account, TCB listed only 10% cash back as the pending amount. TCB customer service, through multiple email outreaches, was thoroughly unhelpful and basically just told me that I would have to live with the 10% amount. They blamed me for clicking through on the offer too late even though their site was still showing the offer as 20%.

justin

I would not recommend this website for cash back. I have made several purchases uses top cash back and only 1 was approved. They make the process difficult, it can take MONTHS to be approved from the transaction, and it can take even longer to receive your cash back. I have never had any issues with Ebates and I have made hundreds of dollar transactions with them. I have even tried frugal and they seem to be a lot easier to earn transactions. I would not recommend using them; if your end result is to earn cash back with the purchase…. do not chance it with top cash back. They will give excuses with “mis clicks”, u must clear your cookies before the transaction, and never use coupon codes with online transactions. The whole purpose of purchasing online is using coupon codes for savings. To clear your cookies before the transaction would cause you to have to re log in and re add items into your cart online. This makes no sense at all. Complete waste of time.
