On the heels of Memorial Day, I figured it was time to research which retail stores, restaurants, travel services, and entertainment spots offer a veterans or military discount. Why this list is relatively small is kinda a head scratcher for me. You’d think darn everybody would offer a discount of some type for those who keep us save, and more importantly, free. We offer a 20% discount on all legal books, forms, kits AND all services. We have several offices, one of which is in Tacoma, WA, very close to JBLM. Would love to be added to the list. We also offer online services, which active military members stationed overseas have used in the past.

JUST SOME FRIENDLY INFORMATION:

I am a 10% disabled Navy Veteran and receive VA disability pay monthly and receive medical care with the VA, so I have a Medical VA ID Card. This makes me a VA Recipient. I received a 10% discount last week when I purchased a Hepa Air Purifier for my home in Louisville, Ky from Lowe’s.

I COPIED THE BELOW INFO FROM LOWE’S WEBSITE JUST NOW. IF YOU READ IT CAREFULLY YOU WILL BE MORE INFORMED CONCERNING WHO GETS DISCOUNTS, HOW MUCH OF A DISCOUNT AND WHEN.

Lowe’s established the 10% Military Discount to support the men and women who are currently serving our country in the Armed Services1 and to honor Retired Veterans and “VA Recipients”.2 This 10% discount is also extended to the immediate family3 of those who are currently serving, Retired Veterans, or “VA Recipients.”

To qualify for the “Everyday 10% Military Discount,” you must:

Be currently serving in, or retired from, a qualifying branch of the Armed Services, or be the immediate family member of someone who is and have a valid military ID Card.

Or:

********”Be a veteran who “receives VA benefits and have a valid Veteran Identification Card (VIC).”******

We honor all Veterans on three specific holidays: Memorial Day, 4th of July and Veterans Day. During these three holiday weekends,******* we extend the discount to “all veterans” who served honorably and who present a valid Form DD214 or other proof of service. The Lowe’s Military Discount is extended to the Veteran community on these three holidays only.

The Military Discount must be used on personal purchases only and cannot be used for Lowe’s.com purchases, previous sales, or the purchase of gift cards or services including product installations. It cannot be combined with the Lowe’s Price Guarantee, or promotions such as “Spend and Get,” “New Mover,” “Project Starter,” “Your Choice,” or discounts such as Quote Support Program (QSP) quotes.

1 Armed Services — US Army, US Navy, US Air Force, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard, or the National Guard and who are in active, reserve, or retired status.
2 Retired Veterans *****and VA Recipients***** — Veterans who have retired after 20 years of service *******and/or those who receive VA Benefits********
3 Immediate Family — Spouses and/or dependent children (up to 18 years old.)

lental

I am an honorably discharged veteran (60s era) who is neither retired military nor am I receiving any VA benefits.

I therefore have no VA ID card. However, I do have my DD214 Discharge Form which Lowes and other retailers have honored consistently and I am grateful for it. A couple of times, Lowes managers have asked for my VA ID card but those cards re not available unless you are receiving VA Medical benefits.

I have received VA benefits in the form of home loans (2) and educational benefits but no card is issued for those benefits.

There are thousands of honorably discharged vets who have served both in combat and non-combat roles who didn’t made a career of the military but are still, because of the length of service, activation, etc., eligible for VA benefits but have no identification saying so.

Some states are now including a VA endorsement on drivers licenses but it would seem to me that if one has served honorably and has been discharged, he or she will have the DD214 Discharge Form which should be formally recognized as proof of service.

If not, then the VA should issue a “Veterans ID card” for all who are honorably discharged.

Some of these discounts which honor only active and retired career military personnel leave out millions who served, often serving in harms way, but whose length of service was only for the duration of their draft obligation. I my opinion, any vet who served in combat is more deserving of recognition than career military personnel who have never served in combat.

It is my understanding that every combat soldier is support by seven other soldiers who never see combat. I was one of those.

I earned my veterans status as a result of my reserve unit being activated to the Berlin crisis.. And while I was never in harms way, my serve reed up better prepared regular army units tov move to the crisis zones .

When one serves in any branch of the military, one is committed to serving where he or she is ordered some in combat roles and some in support roles…mostly based on the luck of the draw.

if one veteran is recognized for his/her service, all should be.. whether in regular service or in the reserves or guard. All have committed to laying down his/her life for our country. if necessary, and many have done so. They are all heroes.

Thanks very much, for posting this.

You do not have to collect benifits to get ba card

you could not be more right !

Absolutely agree with every word you said. In case you didn’t know, in 2017 there is supposed to be a VA ID CARD for all veterans, not just those that gain medical benefits. It’s called the VETERAN ID CARD ACT OF 2015. Of course, the VA says it won’t be ready till sometime in 2017. The only criteria is those having a DD-214 on file, and willing to pay a small fee for the ID card. No mention in the language as to the “Characterization” of your discharge. I don’t think this ID card will look the same as the current ones used by VA medical enrollees, however, it will be interesting how Lowes and Home depot handle the new VA ID cards.

Rodney

Lowes accepts my DD214 eveytime. I’m not active, retired, or a disabled vet.

soulmange@yahoo.com

I’m a vet..always get a discount. Maybe it depends on location.

Charles

IChuck get a 10% discount at Lowe’s every time I go there,

aav amphibs

That is an accurate post. Active, retired and reservist, and VA ID card holders get the discount all year long. Those with veteran designators on drivers license, only on three holidays a year, Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veteran’s day.
Now, this is very lame. How about if you’re going to do something like that, make it for more days. Lets say, at least twice per month or one day bi-weekly for the veterans. 3 days per year doesn’t cut it. I could be in the can on that particular time and miss the boat.

Karen Doody

Hi Kyle

My business is photography, specializing in weddings and portraits in eastern NC. With so many military families in this area, it is an honor to be able to offer all active duty personnel 10% off on all photo sessions.

This is all really nice. Great for active military, military retirees and those who get VA benefits. But a big bloc of those vets left out are those who served an enlistment and got out. Like me, I served in the USAF from 1960 to 1964. Got an honorable discharge and went home to college and a job. Does not look like we are included…….

Phil Landsberg

B&H Photo Proudly offers discounts to all active military and armed forces personnel with a .mil address

Zee

trace

Cabela’s does not have a discount I was informed last time I was there. Great adventure 6 flags gives what they feel like based on the party size up to 4 a person. My brother and his wife got 50% off just them but 7 people they gave 30%.
