On the surface, the Home Depot price match policy seems fairly straight-forward. But when you start digging into the details it gets really confusing and can even differ by Home Depot location. With that said, let’s dig into it and see if we can make some sense of their price match policy. Please leave your experience in the comments so we can learn from each other on this one.

Want a Home Depot Price Match? Here's How to Make It Happen

What Exactly is the Home Depot Price Match Policy?

Here are the specifics of their in-store price match policy:

  • From the Home Depot site, “If you find a current lower price on an identical, in-stock item from any retailer, we will match the price and beat it by 10%.”
  • All you need to do is bring in the ad, printout or even a photo (of either) with you to the register for validation.
  • Don’t be in a hurry as the Home Depot employee may need to contact the competing store to validate the lower price.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As of May 2020, the 10% “price beat” that Home Depot had for years is no longer store policy.

What About an Online Price Match?

Yes, you can indeed get an online price match when shopping via Home Depot.com and finding a lower online price elsewhere.

But they’ll factor in shipping costs when figuring out the price match. Also, when price matching Amazon.com the items must be sold directly by Amazon and not a 3rd party seller.

Items must also be currently available from the competing website and available to ship to your address.

Also, be aware that they’ll match the lower price, but not beat it by 10%.

To make it happen, you can call the Home Depot at 1-800-430-3376 or visit their website and start a live chat.

The rep will verify the pricing for you and help you place the order.

Will Home Depot Price Match Amazon (or any online store)?

For online purchases they absolutely will.

For brick and mortar purchases, it gets a little fuzzy and seems to be left to the discretion of the individual store manager if they’ll price match online pricing.

Home Depot really needs to fix this policy as it has caused a ton of confusion in recent years.

Here is the bottom line: If you find a Home Depot location that tends to have a more inclusive price match policy, you’d be smart to shop there all the time as you’ll always be able to get online pricing and have the product in your hands immediately.

If you run into any push-back from a Home Depot employee, be sure to stand your ground and involve the manager and HD corporate (if you can).

Most Home Depot managers will cave and give you the price match.

Again, all items must be sold directly by Amazon and not a 3rd party Amazon seller.

What Products are Excluded from a Home Depot Price Match?

Yes, there are some important exclusions…

Custom or special order products. – Includes things like custom doors and window coverings.

Volume or wholesale discounts.

3rd party or discount site items – This includes 3rd party items sold on Amazon.

Open-box, reconditioned, refurbished items.

Sales tax is excluded.

Rebates, free offers, and one-time-only promotions. – This includes bundle offers.

Competitor pricing due to typographical error or misprint.

Pricing from membership-based retail wholesalers. – This includes Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s.

Competitor bid and auctions site pricing. – This includes eBay.

I’ll keep this list of exclusions updated as new ones pop-up.

Can You Combine a Coupon with a Price Match?

If you have a Home Depot coupon in-hand, NO, you CANNOT also get a price match on that purchase.

I was hoping you could but alas, it is not possible.

I verified this with a Home Depot store manager.

What About Price Matching on Black Friday?

Surprisingly, YES.

Most store won’t price match on Black Friday, but Home Depot is not one of them.

So if you find a killer deal at Lowe’s on Black Friday, Home Depot (brick & mortar) will not only match it, but they’ll beat it by 10%.

This where the magic of their policy really happens.

Start doing this next Black Friday as it makes for one of the best days of the year to buy tools and hardware.

Home Depot refused to match price on washer, Dryer and pedestals. They were exactly the same items. I was told this is at Managers discretion. New manager must be proving his value to corporate and not the customer. I will only shop at Lowe’s which is less than a mile away from Home Depot.

I purchased a jet wood lathe last week at Home Depot. After completing the purchase I found sale prices on the same lathe at Acme Tool and woodcraft Supply. I went to the Home Depot site and started a chat. With very little effort I was given a $124.99 credit. It was quick and easy. I am more than happy to give Home Depot more of my business.

I was shopping for an under the sink hot water heater. home Depot had it for 260 Amazon had it for 160. I printed out the Amazon link AND home depot’s price matching policy which states they will match ANY retailer. It does not specify online or local retailer which is actually to the benefit of the consumer. I went to the cashier and she said no they don’t price match Amazon/online. I went to customer service and he said that Amazon was a wholesaler, not a retailer so they wouldn’t match it. I said that is BS and I askef for the manager on duty/store manager. I showed him home depot’s policy which was in black and white. He really had no recourse and had to give me the hot water heater for the amazon.com price. The problem is you have too many chefs in the kitchen with too much ego that take things personally and that’s why we see so many different results. Best recourse is to print out all the information and bring it with you. That way there’s no question. Good luck!

The managers at the stores have no clue what they’re talking about. I got an online price match from one of their online representatives and the manager at the store refused to honour that price match. She said that their store policy is different than their online policy. Makes no sense. They only have one price match policy for their entire organization. In the future, don’t bother wasting your time with their store managers. Chat online representatives and purchase it for pick-up or delivery. They are way more knowledgeable than the dumbo’s in the store.

Yea they don’t price match themselves, ain’t that amazing. Totally convoluted.

Bhotrod

They were probably all confused bc you call them “hot water heaters”…… when in fact, they are “water heaters”……

I went to Home Depot for a set of Husky 6 in. Clamps. It was $34.97 but on HomeDepot.com it was $24.97. A $10 difference, so I asked for a price match. I showed the price to the cashier from HomeDepot.com price from my phone. Same Home Depot location on HomeDepot.com for in stock at store. The cashier was hesitant to do the price match. I said this is from HomeDepot.com, not a competitor. The cashier said “they don’t usually do it but they do it this time”. So does Home Depot not price match HomeDepot.com?

Fee

Nope they don’t only competitors

My Dad just bought a Ridged table saw from HD. There was another HD that had it for $100 less and they wouldn’t even price match there own store. He left and went back later and they said they would give him $50 off. I love HD but I find this crazy

Does 30 days price adjustment time frame work for Home Depot appliance purchased at full price but went on sale $500 less before the item was delivered? Help! Getting the run around!!! We will speak to managers tomorrow and hope to get the price adjustment .. thanks for any input

Just went through a chat online with Home Depot. Found a deal on two Milwaukee sockets sets for almost $100 less than Home Depot. I gave the website, part numbers and everything. She said because they sell on Amazon she can’t price match. I said I didn’t even find it on Amazon. I googled the part numbers and their website popped up. I went through entering all my info in to see what shipping costs would be and they even had free shipping. The HD rep said she checked with her manager and she said no as well. I saved the conversation. I’ll be buying from the cheaper place. Their loss.

HD model # shows a different number for an item that is correctly identified from most stores they price match. The specs of the item confirms that it is the exact same model and even displays the true model number from their website. If you search for Model i9040, all stores who have it id’s the item correctly. However HD has their own unique # so your price match will likely be denied, a shrewd way of circumventing a commitment.

While this site states that coupons cannot be included with price match this does not (or did not for me) apply to a gift card. I just purchased a laser distance measure (not a hugely expensive item) and got a price match to Amazon and was able to include a gift card. I executed my price match with an online chat (text). The gift card covered most of the reduced purchase price and I am still paying shipping. At the direction of my associate I had to purchase the item at full price and provide the order number for the price match (I applied the gift card to the initial purchase). In all, I was very satisfied with the process.

DR/TL – gift cards work, online text is awesome

When I tried to get them to do a price match they told me I had to find a matching product that was available in a nearby store that I could go in to get. Nothing that has to be shipped. It had to be me actually having ability to get physical product right then. Didn’t seem to match up with what the policy says.

Home Depot wouldn’t even price match a fridge from Lowes! Home Depot is like a mile from me, Lowes is about 50 miles so I wanted to get it from Home Depot. When I went in the store and spoke to a manager about getting a price match he said it only applies to appliances in the store. I was like WHAT!? You only have display models in the store! He said since they have to ship it to me I couldn’t get the price match. I was livid. I wound up just ordering online from Lowes and they delivered it the very next day on a Sunday! Screw you Home Depot.

This week when I tried to price match two items and met the criteria, HD rep said she had to charge me the higher HD price but would credit me the difference. I told her that had never happened before. She yelled at me to trust her. That was several days ago and the credit never showed up on my credit card. I asked to speak to a manager and she said none was there. I called back and the person read the notes and gave me the same story that they must sell it at the higher price and make an adjustment. First rep said I would receive a confirming email about the credit within 30 min. It has been 3 days and I never got it.

HD customer service price matched a Bosch dishwasher prior to my purchase. As we went to charge my HD card over the phone, it didn’t go through (I learned later they thought it was a fraud charge & put a hold on it). The next morning, knowing HD approved the price match, I purchased the Bosch dishwasher online for their full price. Called to receive the price match and after 27 minutes, escalating , it was still declined. Cancelled my $1232 order and went with another website and saved $200!

Does the price match guarantee count for rental items?
