On the surface, the Home Depot price match policy seems fairly straight-forward. But when you start digging into the details it gets really confusing and can even differ by Home Depot location. With that said, let’s dig into it and see if we can make some sense of their price match policy. Please leave your experience in the comments so we can learn from each other on this one.

Want a Home Depot Price Match? Here's How to Make It Happen

What Exactly is the Home Depot Price Match Policy?

Here are the specifics of their in-store price match policy:

  • From the Home Depot site, “If you find a current lower price on an identical, in-stock item from any retailer, we will match the price and beat it by 10%.”
  • All you need to do is bring in the ad, printout or even a photo (of either) with you to the register for validation.
  • Don’t be in a hurry as the Home Depot employee may need to contact the competing store to validate the lower price.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As of May 2020, the 10% “price beat” that Home Depot had for years is no longer store policy.

What About an Online Price Match?

Yes, you can indeed get an online price match when shopping via Home Depot.com and finding a lower online price elsewhere.

But they’ll factor in shipping costs when figuring out the price match. Also, when price matching Amazon.com the items must be sold directly by Amazon and not a 3rd party seller.

Items must also be currently available from the competing website and available to ship to your address.

Also, be aware that they’ll match the lower price, but not beat it by 10%.

To make it happen, you can call the Home Depot at 1-800-430-3376 or visit their website and start a live chat.

The rep will verify the pricing for you and help you place the order.

Will Home Depot Price Match Amazon (or any online store)?

For online purchases they absolutely will.

For brick and mortar purchases, it gets a little fuzzy and seems to be left to the discretion of the individual store manager if they’ll price match online pricing.

Home Depot really needs to fix this policy as it has caused a ton of confusion in recent years.

Here is the bottom line: If you find a Home Depot location that tends to have a more inclusive price match policy, you’d be smart to shop there all the time as you’ll always be able to get online pricing and have the product in your hands immediately.

If you run into any push-back from a Home Depot employee, be sure to stand your ground and involve the manager and HD corporate (if you can).

Most Home Depot managers will cave and give you the price match.

Again, all items must be sold directly by Amazon and not a 3rd party Amazon seller.

What Products are Excluded from a Home Depot Price Match?

Yes, there are some important exclusions…

Custom or special order products. – Includes things like custom doors and window coverings.

Volume or wholesale discounts.

3rd party or discount site items – This includes 3rd party items sold on Amazon.

Open-box, reconditioned, refurbished items.

Sales tax is excluded.

Rebates, free offers, and one-time-only promotions. – This includes bundle offers.

Competitor pricing due to typographical error or misprint.

Pricing from membership-based retail wholesalers. – This includes Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s.

Competitor bid and auctions site pricing. – This includes eBay.

I’ll keep this list of exclusions updated as new ones pop-up.

Can You Combine a Coupon with a Price Match?

If you have a Home Depot coupon in-hand, NO, you CANNOT also get a price match on that purchase.

I was hoping you could but alas, it is not possible.

I verified this with a Home Depot store manager.

What About Price Matching on Black Friday?

Surprisingly, YES.

Most store won’t price match on Black Friday, but Home Depot is not one of them.

So if you find a killer deal at Lowe’s on Black Friday, Home Depot (brick & mortar) will not only match it, but they’ll beat it by 10%.

This where the magic of their policy really happens.

Start doing this next Black Friday as it makes for one of the best days of the year to buy tools and hardware.

I just contacted Home Depot with a price match on a vanity. Same exact item was listed on HD site for $717 and I found it online through Google Shopping (search engine) for $349.99. I presented ALL the necessary information to the CS rep so they could compare with the retailer and was turned down. Same old line about not a competitor, blah, blah, blah… Every time I try to price match with Home Depot I am turned down. Apparently, they do not want the business, therefore, I will go elsewhere from now on. Too bad they are fraudulent and can not live up to their own policies. I’m sure the reps are trained to give the customer as much push back so they do not have to honor.

Go ahead and shop elsewhere. We don’t care.

Spoke with an extremely rude Home Depot rep about price matching a Ryobi blower. Exact same product on a website by the name of Cargo. This rep came back with this outlandish response of the Cargo website does not meet their(Home Depots) criteria. Didn’t want to continue with the foolishness by asking her to explain that idiotic statement. I immediately hung up and will gladly return the item to my local Home Depot store and but from the Cargo app. Home Depots loss. Really wish all my problems were this easy to resolve plus by returning the item it gives me a sense of revenge for the rude customer no-service rep whom I was so misfortunate to have answered my call.

Ryobi tools are only sold by Home Depot. Anyone else selling Ryobi is reselling it. The price match rules clearly state no “3rd party or discount site items”. Cargo is a reselling app. There’s nothing outlandish about them not matching the price on Cargo. Expecting them to price match Cargo is like expecting them to price match eBay or Facebook marketplace.

That’s a fake Chinese website so don’t get bent out of shape for comparing to fraud.

Home Depot WILL price match in-store EASILY!
Walked in and saw the exact same air conditioner sold at a Lowes. Same model same everything for $80 less. Lowes is only 1 town over and it was in stock in both stores. The check out took all of 5 mins and there was ZERO issues! 1-2-3 good karma. If you compare big box to big box it’s very simple. I was just there tonight and I price matched Sterilite 64 Qt storage containers selling for more than Walmart. They didn’t hesitate to match it saving $4 on ten bins. $40 is a tank of gas at $3.17/gal.

I was just at (2/28/23) my local Home Depot to see if they would price match a Dewalt brad nailer that was $60 less on Amazon and sold directly from Amazon. The checkout girl was totally good with the price match, but when she called her manager to get the approval, the manager said no. She gave various half-a**ed reasons why they couldn’t do it. Bottom line, despite what HD says about price matching, they don’t price match Amazon even if the product is sold directly from Amazon and not a third party.

Gregory Fowler

Both of my local HD and Lowes stores price match Amazon as long as it is direct from Amazon, never an issue, 29334.

Deborah Harper

Absolutely untrue. In fact their prices vary from store to store (their store) They would not even match their own price! That said put a lot of tile back on the shelf and will order online from somewhere else. So not only do they NOT price match they gouge by zip code.

Chelcie

I was also turned down via live chat, they said the reason was that it was on a one time special buy sale, it did not say that anywhere I looked through it all all it said was the original price with a slash through it and the new lower price it was frustrating I thought the point was find it on sale we match it not make up lies and excuses to why they won’t, I will only shop Lowe’s from now on. They only do certain online retailers so they probably won’t price match but atleast they are honest and straight forward, not making things up as they go and not false advertising as I now strongly feel Home Depot is!

Joshua Barton

I ordered through Home Depot online and product was never delivered.

I went into the store since they had the product to price match it, and the manager came and was rude not only to me but even the employee trying to help me.

They refused to price match or even find out why the vendor isn’t fulfilling their order to me as it says they have plenty of product in stock.

I just requested a price match for a washer and dryer.

I on-line ordered both on Tuesday Aug 16, 2023, their price dropped $150 each on Thursday Aug 17, 2023, they were delivered Friday Aug 18, 2023.
I requested a price match via on-line chat Friday Aug 18, 2023 and was told that for appliances there is only “one price match per order” which is not part of the on-line price match policy.

The chatter interpreted this to mean only one item per order.
