Target Price-Match

Starting today, October 1st, 2015, Target has updated their price-match policy and you can now price-match like a crazy person at your local Target location. Target will now match the online pricing of 29 websites, up from a messily five. The five websites they did price match were the big players you’d expect: Amazon, Best Buy, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, and Walmart.

But now they price-match a whole new slew of specialty stores that often offer strong sales events and provide a terrific opportunity to get the same price at Target, even if the competing store is not in your town.

Here they are in alphabetical order:

  • Amazon.com
  • Babies ‘R’ Us.com
  • Bed Bath & Beyond.com
  • Best Buy.com
  • Barnes & Noble.com
  • Buy Buy Baby.com
  • Costco.com – Not clear yet if you’ll need a Costco membership to be eligible for a Target price-match.

  • Diapers.com
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods.com
  • Drugstore.com
  • GameStop.com

  • Macy’s.com
  • Newegg.com
  • Office Depot.com
  • Petco.com
  • Petsmart.com

  • Sports Authority.com
  • Staples.com
  • Toys ‘R’ Us.com
  • Ulta.com
  • Walgreens.com

How to get the Target Price-Match:

  1. I highly recommend arming your smartphone with the ShopSavvy app so you can quickly scan the bar-code of the item and see what other online (and brick & mortar) retailers are selling a particular item for.
  2. If the retailer is one of the 29 listed above, and has the item cheaper than Target, simply show evidence on your mobile device to a Target employee. You can also bring in a print-out of the product page and show it to an employee.
  3. I recommend starting at the customer service desk in the front of the store as these employees are typically well acquainted with the Target price match policy and can quickly help you get the lower price.
  4. The product must be “in-stock” on the competitor’s website at the time the price-match is requested.
  5. There is a limit of 1 competitor online price-match, per identical item, per guest.

Caveats to Target’s Policy:

  1. Target won’t match the price of a 3rd party seller on Amazon.com.
  2. Alaska and Hawaii Target stores are excluded from price matching online competitors.
  3. For obvious reasons, you can’t get a price match on exclusive Target brands as other retailers simply don’t carry those products.

It’s also worth noting that you can get an in-store price match if the lower price is found on Target.com. Surprisingly, the price in-store is sometimes higher than Target’s online price. Make sure you do your research and get the lower of the two. Happy savings.

I think this is pretty huge news. We’ll see if it increases sales or if there is any backlash once it gets fully put in place.
